Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was. This internship involves the hands-on preservation and restoration of multiple historic structures and cultural landscape features in two separate NPS units (Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and Channel Islands National Park.) Project work includes using both historic and modern tools and techniques related to masonry, carpentry and arboriculture while applying the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Ideal candidates will have experience will have a basic understanding of hand tools used in construction, comfortable with physical tasks such as bending, stooping, lifting and climbing ladders, and would be able to communicate well both orally and in writing.
